      • The Story Behind the Song

"To pray for another person is love them in one of the deepest possible ways. I wrote this song to give people the words they need to ask for prayer, which is often very difficult, especially for people who everyone else relies on. To be vulnerable enough to ask for help is an act of great courage. I liked this song so much, I recorded it twice, and both versions made their way onto the album.

The two versions are strikingly different. I had envisioned it as a piano-driven ballad, but when I showed it to the band they gave it a more uptempo country-rock feel, with Elisa Smith really nailing the country vibe on the vocals. I absolutely loved that version, but I wanted to do a side-by-side comparison, so I recorded a much more intimate version featuring Mia Boostrom and Brad Goff on piano and vocals, along with Daniel Tavani on cello. The two versions ultimately sound like completely different songs to me, so I decided to include them both. I think the they will hit people differently depending on where they are in their journey."

        Lyrics

Pray for me, I can’t do it for myself

Lately I don’t know what’s wrong with me

The words don’t seem to flow, my faith it comes and goes

I never thought that this is who I’d be

So many times I’ve prayed for you, now I need the same thing, too

You don’t know how much this means

So take my hand, my friend, and pray for me

Carry me, I can’t get there on my own

Lately I don’t know what’s wrong with me

My legs are feeling weak, I can barely move my feet

I never thought that this is who I’d be

So many times I’ve carried you, now I need the same thing, too

You don’t know how much this means

So lift me up my friend and carry me

I used to be the one that all my friends would lean upon

        It never bothered me

I know I’ll be that way again, I just can’t tell you when

So until then, I’m going to need you to

Comfort me – I’m feeling so alone

I need the gentle touch of a friend I love so much

I won’t make it on my own

So many times I’ve pulled you through, now I need the same thing too

You don’t know how much this means

Just hold me in your arms and comfort me

Take my hand, my friend, and pray for me
