The Story Behind the Song
"I loved listening to the radio as a child. Back then, music wasn’t as siloed as it is today. You could turn on the most middle-of-the-road AM radio station and hear everything from R&B to country, or from rock to funk – often one right after the other. This song is my homage to that era and to those wonderful Motown songs whose tight, complex harmonies told us stories of love and heartbreak. The last time I broke up with a girl, Ronald Reagan was the president, so I needed to dig deeply into the memory banks to bring up those feelings."
Lyrics
I never thought I would say this, but I think I’ve had enough
When a taker keeps taking, sometimes the giver just gives up
What more could I do? Who else could I be?
Tried so hard to win your love, but I can only be me
It always starts with the small things: how I look...am I late?
But it just keeps on building, and I crumble under the weight
What more could I do? Who else could I be?
Tried so hard to win your love, but I can only be me
I’m tired of not being enough, of thinking this is okay
Don’t know when I’ll find myself but I start looking today
What more could I do? Who else could I be?
Tried so hard to win your love, but I can only be me
